How to Make Persian Rug

Persian rugs have been hand-manufactured in Iran (once Persia) for more than 3,000 years. They come in many different weaves, colors, designs and fabrics. Today they are highly valued in the Western world as interior decorating pieces. Although it is a long and challenging process, hand-weaving a Persian rug can be a rewarding experience if you have the expertise.

Despite recent technological advancement and development that has occurred over the years, handmade carpets today are still made in the same way as they were hundreds of years ago. The art of weaving a carpet has been passed on for many generations and demands several different steps, which are all part of a genuine handicraft which we will explain more in the following pages.

Persian Rug

Antique Persian rugs are classified as those that were made prior to 1930 in Persia, what we know now as the country of Iran. These gorgeous treasures were hand woven using high-quality Wool or Silk and dyed using all-natural vegetable dyes (synthetic dyes were used later, and would disqualify a Persian rug as 'antique'). The oldest existing rugs date back to the 16th century Safavid Dynasty in Persia and sell for $20,000,000 or more.

Antique rugs are sold by PSF prices (price per square foot), KPSI prices (number of knots per square inch) or RAJ prices (number of knots per seven centimeters). Knots are extremely important for determining many rug prices. Knots are counted on the back of the rug. They are the individual hand-sewn fibers used to construct the rug originally--as a rule, the more knots per square inch, the more expensive the rug. Also, be sure to ask--where was this rug made? If it wasn't made in Iran, it's not Persian. Overall condition and wear round out the list of factors you should take into account when purchasing an antique Persian rug.
